July 2004

This month.

Workshop/Flat Conversion

Inside the flat, the carpet is re-laid, the painting completed and the architrave, skirting, toilet & wash basin are fitted.

Outside, we have a hand-rail made which I fit and also add a non-slip finish to the steps. Neither was required from a Building Regs point of view but we decided they were necessary from a "duty of care" to our B&B guests perspective.

As you know, we re-cycle all the rain water from the house roof, this month we add a water butt to catch some from the garage/flat as well.

VAT Return

You are allowed to submit your VAT return up to three months after official completion of the house - we took full advantage of this period and duly submitted on 15th July. This is a mammoth piece of administration - do not imagine you can do it in a couple of hours! A detailed breakdown will be listed at a later date but suffice to say at this stage that our claim is for £26,000. Customs & Excise are supposed to complete your claim within 3 weeks but I have received a letter saying it will be three months due to pressure of work! Don't plan on getting your money back quickly!

Home Building & Renovating Show

I completed my lecture on our house building project at the Peterborough show on 3-4 July. These were well attended & must have gone well as I have been asked to repeat my performance at their Wembley show 10,11 & 12th Sep 2004. See you there!
