Week89 - 23Jun 2003
Progress this week
This week with the main bedroom complete, I set to work on digging the trenches for the Heat Pump. In case you have forgotten, the heat pump works like this:
- Water is pumped around the garden in plastic pipes (2 x 200m loops in my case), 1m below the surface where the temperature is 11°C all year
- The water therefore enters the house (and the heat pump) at 11°C and this water is used to heat a refrigerant - in so doing the water is cooled to 1°C and sets off around the garden again
- The refrigerant is compressed raising its temperature to 55°C
- The refrigerant then heats the domestic hot water and heating water and so on
The system is widely used in Sweden (where mine was manufactured) and through much of Europe and the USA. It is 350% efficient i.e. for every KW of electricity used to pump the water, compress the refrigerant etc - it produces 3.5KW of heat.
This week I start digging the trenches.........
